More frequent occasions for the creation and development of these notions first occur in higher mathematics.
Definite portions of a manifold, distinguished by a mark or by a boundary, are called Quanta . Having constructed the notion of a manifold of n dimensions, and having found that its true character consists in the property that the determination of position in it may be reduced to n determinations of magnitude, we come to the second of the o'keeffe, problems proposed above, viz., the study of the measure-relations of which such a manifold is capable, and of the conditions which suffice to determine them.
