In this group of philosophical dialogues, Plato uses a conversational prose format to explore the nature of society, seeking to define the characteristics of an ideal society, or republic. Inspired by papers essay, the teachings of 11x17 paper his mentor, Socrates, in the Republic Plato theorizes that the answer to federalist papers essay, society's ills lies not in research reforming political systems but in adopting philosophic principles as guidelines.
To implement and papers essay oversee these principles in society, Plato proposes the creation of what he calls ruler philosophers—individuals who will lead society into an ethical existence based on predetermined principles that are expounded in the Republic. The era also exhibited remarkable cultural vitality and included the great dramatists Sophocles, Euripides, and Aristophanes, of whom Plato was a younger contemporary. Plato was descended from a distinguished family of statesmen; his mother's cousin Critias and his maternal uncle Charmides, both portrayed in federalist essay eponymous dialogues, belonged to the Thirty Tyrants, the oligarchs who ruled Athens in cooperation with Sparta after the Peloponnesian War.
The unsettled political climate during the essay, period gave rise to a class of itinerant professional instructors called Sophists who made their living teaching rhetoric and public speaking—skills prized in the political arena—as well as geometry, astronomy, and papers arithmetical calculation. Socrates—whom the young Plato met while the elder Athenian discoursed in the streets and search puzzle answer homes of the federalist essay, city on topics related to the virtuous life—objected to the aims of the Sophists, asserting that they manipulated language for their own ends, obfuscating and confusing in order to succeed in argumentation, rather than elucidating and narrative personal essays searching for truth. Known primarily through Plato's dialogues, Socrates advocated a quest for federalist papers self-knowledge and cultivation of the soul, and claimed that contemplation is the noblest human activity. Plato's own career as a writer spanned the greater part of his life. All of his known works, including thirty-four dialogues of varying length and thirteen epistles, are extant. Of these, the Republic is considered his greatest work because of the representative nature of its content as well as because of its importance as the premier example of ancient Greek prose.
Plot and Major Characters. Composed as a dramatic dialogue among various characters, the principal among them Socrates, the Republic is divided into ten main books. This division, as scholars have repeatedly pointed out, is somewhat artificial and was dictated more by the limitations of book production in ancient times—in this case, the amount of material that would fit onto a papyrus roll—rather than any internal break in the stranger meursault essay the sequence of the federalist papers, argument. The text begins with a prelude, where the main characters and setting are introduced and the subject of the dialogue—justice, or right conduct—explained briefly. In addition to Socrates, who is the main narrator of the dialogue, other characters include Glaucon and Adeimantus, elder brothers of Plato, and Polemarchus, a resident of Athens at on chapter 4 of Shaped Testament author Carter, whose house the conversation takes place. Ostensibly a discussion about the essay, nature of justice, expounded on first by Thrasymachus, who states the Sophist position that justice and its related conventions are rules that were imposed on society by those in power, the rest of the dialogue is mainly a response from essay on chapter 4 of Events that the New Testament World for the author ( Warren Carter, Socrates to this statement. In essence, the argument to prove the inherent good of papers justice leads Plato, via Socrates, to lay out his vision of the ideal state, covering a wide range of topics, including the social, educational, psychological, moral, and philosophical aspects of the republic. The main intention of the Republic is to 11x17, define the principles that govern an federalist papers ideal society.
In doing so, Plato touches upon many important ideas about education, ethics, politics, and morality in this text. Scholars have pointed out that the main argument of the Republic is partly a response to the political unrest and instability Plato witnessed in contemporary Athenian society. Economics Search Puzzle Answer Key. Following the papers essay, end of the Peloponnesian War, Athens became a democracy of sorts, led mostly by laymen, who, in Plato's view, tended to implement policies based more on popular demand rather than necessity or principle. Thus, Plato developed a perspective that viewed all contemporary forms of government as corrupt, theorizing that the only hope for finding true justice both for society and the individual lies in philosophy, and that “mankind will have no respite from trouble until either real philosophers gain political power, or politicians become by some miracle true philosophers.” This is the central theme of the Republic. In the context of this premise, Plato touches upon several major issues, focusing the most significant discussions on the nature and definition of ethics, education, and narrative essays the organization of society and politics, as well as religion and federalist philosophy. In contrast to the Sophists, who advocated the primacy of rhetoric over moral training, Plato proposes the an essay about computers, creation of an educational system that focuses on the molding of character, with the ultimate goal of the educator being not just imparting knowledge, but also the ability “to turn the mind's eye to the light so that it can see for itself.” According to Plato, one of the main problems of his society was the federalist essay, inability to distinguish true reality from reflections or images of reality. Plato employs his famous allegory of the economics terms word key, cave to illustrate how mankind learns and papers can be mislead by the manner in which he learns.
Plato's preferred educational system strictly controls the upbringing of the ruling class in an essay about computers order to help them differentiate between appearance and reality and form correct views. He advocates the study of mathematics and abstract ideas rather than art, music, or literature because the essay, latter deal with representation of ideas, not ideas themselves; he even goes so far as to advocate censorship of art, when necessary, in the service of proper education. Another powerful focus in the Republic is the discussion of justice. Responding primarily to economics search puzzle key, the Sophists' position, that morality is important only because of the social and personal consequences that follow, Plato contends that morality and federalist essay justice are key components of an ideal society and that they must underlie all areas of human interaction. The Republic has a unique place in the history of Western literature because of its importance as a literary, political, as well as philosophical text. Its reception in early commentaries was particularly positive and for many centuries it was regarded as an essays ideal text, based on federalist essay, its literary and thematic merits. The Stranger Essay. A. E. Taylor's introduction to his translation of the Republic is an example of this critical approach.
Later commentators have been more critical, however, and many twentieth-century studies of the Republic have emphasized the totalitarian nature of Plato's society, critiquing him for the degree of power he invests in the philosopher rulers. Federalist Papers. In her introduction to the Republic Julia Annas remarks on the power of the text and the persuasiveness of Plato's assessments, noting that in terms word search puzzle answer key some ways, the papers, systematic treatment of such important subjects as morality, politics, and knowledge is “designed to copy paper, sweep the reader along,” often leading first-time readers to either accept the premise of the papers essay, text without question or to reject it entirely. After further study, though, writes Annas, the Republic reveals itself as a work of great complexity, and thus a text that rewards detailed analysis. In his assessment of the role of the good as it is explained by Plato, Mitchell Miller also comments on the multilayered nature of ideas presented in the Republic and focuses his discussion by providing context from other contemporary sources of Greek prose. Other modern studies of Plato have also tended to focus on specific ideas explored in the Republic. For example, R. E. Allen (see Further Reading) explores the speech of Glaucon to highlight the idea of justice and on chapter Seven that Testament World for the ( Warren Carter morality, while James O'Rourke ruminates about the papers, respective positions accorded to myth and logic in Plato's ideal society. In his essay on slavery as it is defined in the Republic, Brian Calvert reviews other critical commentaries on this issue, concluding that Plato's republic “could not contain slaves.” Critical commentaries on the Republic continue to flourish, attesting to the sustaining power of the ideas contained in the text, whether they relate to society, politics, religion, education, or human nature. More specifically, keywords can be precise “hard” skills — job-specific/profession-specific/industry-specific skills, technological terms and descriptions of about computers, technical expertise (including hardware and software in which you are proficient), job titles, certifications, names of products and services, industry buzzwords and jargon, types of degrees, names of colleges, company names, terms that tend to impress, such as “Fortune 500,” and even area codes, for narrowing down searches geographically. Awards you’ve won and essay, names of professional organizations to which you belong can even be used as keywords. There are actually a number of good ways to identify the word, keywords that an employer might be looking for federalist papers essay, in any given job search, and meursault, we list many of them in our sidebar, Resources for Identifying Keywords. But the method that career experts most commonly mention is the process of scrutinizing job postings to federalist papers see what keywords are repeatedly mentioned in meursault, association with a given job title. We offer two examples of how to find keywords in job postings in our sidebar Researching Keywords in Job Postings. OK, so now that we have some good ideas about papers essay how to identify keywords, how should they be used? One popular method has been a laundry list of keywords — a keyword summary with no context — toward the top of the resume.
As we’ll see, this method is problematic. It still makes some sense to front-load the resume with keywords, however, partly to ensure you get as many as possible into meursault, the document, and partly for the phase of resume review in which humans will actually screen your resume (after the initial screening by the search software) and may be attracted to keywords that appear early in the document. A section of keywords can use one of many possible headings, such as “Key Skills,” “Core Competencies,” “Key Proficiencies,” and “Areas of Expertise.” A big note of caution here: Keyword sections are beneficial on federalist papers, resumes when they are entered into Applicant Tracking Systems, but “disembodied” keywords do not rank as highly in the systems as keywords used in context. “More advanced ATS systems will evaluate the context in personal, which each keyword is used,” advises resume writer Karen Siwak, “and will give higher ranking to a keyword that is papers essay, included within the description of a career accomplishment, compared to one that is included in a keyword table.” Thus, also consider keywords in bullet points in your Summary of Qualifications/Professional Profile, if you have one, and in personal, the bullet points under each of your jobs. Instead of a mere list of words, the summary or profile section presents keywords in federalist essay, context, more fully describing the the stranger meursault, activities and accomplishments in which the keywords surfaced in your work. This contextual collection of keywords that describes your professional self in a nutshell will certainly hold the interest of papers essay, human readers better than a list of paper, words will. Ideally, keywords are tied to accomplishments rather than job duties, so a good way to federalist papers make the terms search puzzle answer key, leap from keyword to essay a nice, contextual bullet point to include in essay, a profile section is to take each keyword you’ve identified as critical to the job and papers essay, list an accomplishment that tells how you’ve used the skill represented by that keyword. For example: Solid team-building skills, demonstrated by assembling Starwood’s marketing team from the ground up to service Starwood International’s 7,700 hotels worldwide. Savvy in e-commerce marketing concepts, having participated in design of two company Web sites, and copy cheap, conducted a symposia series to instruct hotel executives in the value of Internet marketing. Keywords should also appear in the rest of your resume beyond the papers, profile or summary section. Most applicant-search software not only looks for keywords but also ranks them on a weighted basis according to the importance of the word to the job criteria, with some keywords considered mandatory and others that are merely desirable.
The keywords can also be weighted and your resume ranked according to how many times mandatory words appear in the stranger essay, your resume. Papers! If your document contains no mandatory keywords, the keyword search obviously will overlook your resume. Those with the greatest “keyword density” will be chosen for the next round of screening, this time by meursault, a human. Generally, the more specific a keyword is to a particular job or industry, the federalist papers essay, more heavily it will be weighted. Skills that apply to many jobs and industries tend to be less weighty. Since you also don’t know the exact form of a keyword that the employer will use as a search criterion, it makes sense to also use synonyms, various forms of your keywords, and both the spelled-out and acronym versions of common terms. For example, use both “manager” and “management;” try both CRM and Customer Relationship Management. And remember that humans can make certain assumptions that computers can’t. A commonly cited example is the concept of “cold-calling.” People who read the phrase “cold-calling” in your resume will know you were in sales. But unless “cold-calling” is a specific keyword the employer is seeking in the database search, search software seeking “sales” experience may not flag your resume.
To determine the keyword health of your current resume, highlight all the words in it that, based on your research of ideal positions in your field, would probably be considered keywords. A good goal to shoot for 11x17, is 25-35 keywords, so if you have fewer than that currently, try to beef up every section of your resume with keywords, varying the federalist, forms of the words you choose. You may be starting to get the idea that a good keyword resume must be specifically tailored the each job you’re applying to. You will especially get that idea if you read our sidebar, Researching Keywords in Job Postings. Indeed, a research study notes that resumes that aren’t focused on a job’s specific requirements aren’t competitive.
Does that really mean you need to create a separate resume for paper cheap, every job you apply for? Yes and papers essay, no. It’s probably not practical or realistic to totally revamp your resume for every opening. Narrative Essays! But you can tweak elements such as your professional profile, thus adjusting some of federalist papers, your more important keywords for terms key, each job you apply to. Customizing your resume when completing online profile forms at job boards also makes sense. More Resume Keyword Tips and Cautions. Consider using a service that analyzes resume keywords. Jobscan, for example, analyzes job descriptions and helps applicants easily identify what skills and keywords are most important to a given employer. Jobscan ranks the most important and most frequently-occurring keywords in each job description. Jobscan is fee-based, with fees ranging from $49.95 monthly to federalist papers $89.95 every three months; a limited free version is offered. Barbara Safani of CareerSolvers suggests using LinkedIn’s skills section. “Go to your LinkedIn profile,” Safani writes, “and click on the more tab to on chapter 4 of Seven Events that Shaped the New Testament World Carter ) locate the federalist essay, skills section.
Type a skill into the search box and a pull-down menu will appear with alternative skills that are similar to the one you typed in the search box.” If you post your resume on Internet job boards, be sure to avoid emphasizing keywords that relate to jobs you don’t want. If you have jobs in an essay about, your employment history that are unrelated to what you want to do next, go easy on loading the descriptions of those jobs with keywords. Otherwise, your resume will pop up in searches for your old career and not necessarily your new one. Don’t forget about “soft skills,” such as interpersonal and communications skills that relate to many types of jobs. Although soft skills are difficult to papers essay substantiate on a resume, they are often listed as requirements in job postings. They tend to be transferable and copy, applicable across various jobs/careers, as well as desirable personality traits. Essay! Some job boards have a feature that enables you to see how many times the resume you’ve posted has been searched. If your resume hasn’t been searched very many times, odds are that you lack the right keywords for economics terms word puzzle, the kinds of jobs you want. Keep running lists of keywords so that anytime you come across a word that’s not on essay, your resume but that employers might use as a search parameter, you’ll be ready.
If you’ve published your resume on your own Web page, keywords can boost that version, including in economics terms word puzzle answer key, the resume’s internal coding, since employers may use search “bots” and search engines to scour the Internet for candidates that meet their criteria. See our article Resume Found: Keys to Successful Search Engine Registration. Use keywords in your cover letters, too. Most employers don’t include them in resume databases, but a few do. And keywords in cover letters can be important for attracting the “human scanner.” If you’re answering an ad, tying specific words in your cover letter as closely as possible to the actual wording of the ad you’re responding to can be a huge plus.
In his book, Don’t Send a Resume , Jeffrey Fox calls the papers essay, best letters written in analysis 4 of Events the New World for the author, response to want ads “Boomerang letters” because they “fly the want ad words — the papers, copy — back to the writer of the 11x17 cheap, ad.” In employing what Fox calls “a compelling sales technique,” he advises letter writers to: “Flatter the person who wrote the ad with your response letter. Echo the author’s words and intent. Your letter should be a mirror of the ad.” Fox notes that when the federalist papers, recipient reads such a letter, the thought process will be: “This person seems to fit the description. This person gets it.” Gain additional insights into how you can improve your resume and succeed with ATS using these free Applicant Tracking System Tools for Job-Seekers. 20 Useful Words and Phrases for Top-Notch Essays. In this blog entry I’m going to papers essay, talk with you about transition words. These are the linking words which bind our ideas together and research papers etf, illustrate the essay relationships between the information in our sentences. I have to be really careful, however, to make it very clear that they are not magic ‘smart’ words but if you can understand them they can really give you a lot of power to articulate your ideas. These words are nothing but pretence when you use them carelessly. About? Nonetheless, it will be valuable to federalist papers, develop your understanding of how to use these words to copy, serve your writing. I want to essays, illustrate this point by sharing with you a funny story about something a very witty woman, with whom I work on papers, campus, told me about transition words and high heels. While marking a number of mid-term papers, she turned to me and, with a sigh, lamented her students’ poor use of linking words. She told me that reading them could be like watching young drunk women trying to walk in high heeled shoes.
She cringed as she spoke of how awkward they appeared when they are not accustomed to personal, walking on them when sober, let alone while intoxicated. She added that, in her opinion, women could look striking and elegant while wearing heels but that young woman often didn’t appreciate that walking in them is a skill which requires practice. She surprised me when she likened their attempts to walk to those of newly born calves. Transition words are wonderful tools. Throwing them into your essay carelessly can make your writing look worse than it is and if you are not sure how to use them, it is better to federalist, stick to simpler options. However, if you learn to the stranger meursault essay, use them thoughtfully, they can afford your writing the elegance of top-notch essays. Usually, ‘incidentally’ is used to add relevant information while downplaying its significance compared with that of the stranger meursault, other ideas. “The priority of the zoo had been to federalist papers, protect species’ from extinction. The panda breeding program was enjoying some rare success, while simultaneously , other programs to personal essays, increase the numbers of endangered species were being trialed. Meanwhile , the federalist zoo was being visited by an influx of Events that the New for the author Carter, tourists who were, incidentally , able to enjoy seeing the young animals.” ‘Subsequently’ and ‘afterward’ lead into information after the fact. When writers need to illustrate similarity they can employ words such as ‘in like manner,’ ‘comparatively,’ and ‘correspondingly.’ Whereas , when they wish to highlight difference they have phrases like ‘on the contrary,’ ‘however,’ ‘notwithstanding,’ ‘nevertheless’ and federalist, ‘on the other hand.’ Notwithstanding the vehement opposition to narrative, online education programs being made available to inmates, considerable improvements were made to the re-employment prospects of many offenders who benefited from the trial. Federalist Essay? On the contrary, prisoners who were not able to access education while incarcerated were found to be more likely to reoffend and return to the stranger meursault essay, prison.

The Avalon Project: The Federalist Papers No 10
Formative assessment and feedback. This page addresses feedback from tutors to students intended to help students learn; the use of feedback from papers, students to computers teachers (intended to enhance teaching) is discussed on the Evaluating your teaching page. The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) says: Formative assessment has a developmental purpose and is designed to federalist papers essay help learners learn more effectively by narrative personal giving them feedback on their performance and on federalist essay, how it can be improved and/or maintained (QAA, 2006, p35). Formative assessment is usually contrasted with summative assessment: Summative assessment is used to indicate the extent of a learner's success in about meeting the assessment criteria used to gauge the intended learning outcomes of a module or programme (QAA, 2006, p36). While formative assessment usually takes place during the learning process, summative assessment usually takes place at essay, the end of a unit, module, course or programme.
Central to formative assessment is the feedback given to learners: Feedback. is the stranger, usually defined in terms of information about how successfully something has been or is essay, being done (Sadler, 1989, p120). Good feedback practice is anything that might strengthen the student’s capacity to self-regulate their own performance (Nicol Macfarlane-Dick, 2006, p205). The notion of self-regulation is vital to effective feedback insofar as our goal is to develop independence in learning. Self-regulation means the student has internalised an idea of what good performance is, is able to research papers etf compare his or her own work with that standard, and essay knows what needs to be done to meet the standard (Sadler, 1989, cited in Nicol Macfarlane-Dick, 2006). Papers Etf? Independent learning requires self-regulation. Papers Essay? Self-regulation also explains the connection between students’ understanding of the assessment criteria (internalising what good performance looks like) and feedback. We’ll look at this in the Oxford context in the next section. Across the 11x17 copy, UK, students report less satisfaction with the feedback they receive than with other aspects of their university experience (National Student Survey, 2011) and papers essay this holds true in Oxford too.
Given Oxford’s tutorial-based teaching and consequent high tutor-student ratio, a better satisfaction rating for assessment and feedback might be expected. In fact, Oxford results have consistently revealed that students are least satisfied with the clarity of marking criteria and the quality of essay that author feedback they receive. Federalist Papers? For instance only 57% of undergraduate finalists responding to the 2011 NSS survey agreed that criteria were clear in advance, compared with 93% who said they were satisfied with the course overall. Nearly a quarter of the students disagreed that “feedback on my work has been prompt” or that they “received detailed feedback on my work”. Nearly a quarter disagreed that “feedback on my work has helped me clarify things I did not understand”. When oral feedback is explicitly mentioned in the question, levels of economics word puzzle agreement improved slightly but were still substantially lower than in the other areas about which students were asked (i.e. teaching, academic support, organisation and management, learning resources, personal development). With the intention of supplementing earlier NSS data, Oxford University Student Union’s (OUSU) Initial Response to papers Oxford’s Review of cheap its Teaching Model obtained more than 400 students’ views on teaching at the University through a large scale focus group exercise in Trinity Term 2010. Papers? Many students talked about on chapter Events Shaped the New for the author ( Warren, feedback, wanting information about “what aspects of their work needed improvement” and feedback on the structure of the essay”. Others wanted to use feedback to monitor progress, often specifically towards preparedness for examinations. Comments such as “No-one ever tells you how to federalist papers essay do better; just that you’re going wrong” demonstrate a level of the stranger essay anxiety about the standards they are aiming for.
Students are also unclear about federalist papers, how assessment criteria are applied in examinations. In Humanities and Social Sciences, especially, they find it difficult to see tutorial essays as authentic preparation for examination essays; tutorial essays are written over a week, which is different to completing an essay in an hour under exam conditions. It was suggested, though, that tutors could help by giving feedback in the tutorial on how the essay under discussion might be written under examination conditions. It may help if tutors promote an understanding of tutorial work as developing deep understanding of the cheap, subject area, rather than the ability to federalist papers essay pass examinations; if the former is in place the word answer, latter will be a natural consequence. Explaining to students how tutors apply criteria to tutorial essays and other work, and how examiners do so in essay examinations, is also helpful for personal essays students. Relationship between feedback and federalist papers essay clarity of marking criteria. The two issues of clarity of marking criteria and feedback are related because students’ interpretation of feedback requires understanding of what constitutes good performance. The key principles of terms word search puzzle answer good feedback are rooted in helping students internalise good performance standards. Feedback (or marks) which refer to federalist essay ‘assessment criteria’ are valued by students only if they have a clear understanding of the criteria in research on gold use (Ferguson, 2011, pp55-56).
Marking criteria and papers learning outcomes, however, often use terminology students do not yet understand. Although more sophisticated understandings of the meanings of assessment criteria come with experience, spending time at an early stage working through criteria with students pays dividends in enhanced understanding and on gold a better standard of work produced (Gibbs, 2007). Some terminology used in the marking criteria of two disciplines at Oxford (Economics, History) Analysis (competent, skilful) Argument (incisive, sophisticated) Breadth of reference. Evidence of extensive reading. Solidly competent work. Structure (clear, logical) Style (clear, elegant)
These terms appear to be generic, but their interpretation depends on context. Papers? Is an ‘incisive argument’ in History the same as a ‘logical structure of argument’ in Economics? Knowledge about such terminology in use is frequently tacit; experts may not realise the extent to which disciplinary novices misunderstand it. If feedback on an essay aiming to meet these criteria is to be effective in bringing about improvement, the tutorial discussion must develop shared understandings of complex concepts such as “critical evaluation”, “incisive argument” and meursault essay “originality”. See Ideas and tools (below) for examples of federalist essay exercises to develop students’ understanding of assessment criteria. In 2003-4 Archer (2007) investigated Oxford History and Archaeology students’ experiences of the essay, formative assessment of essays.
He conceptualised the essay as an artefact (p28) that could be used to diagnose student learning attainment, indicating a starting point for using the tutorial to develop learning further. Archer’s findings indicate that student’ essay-writing benefits from explicit student-tutor discussion (and mutual understanding) of various points: What are tutorial essays for? Tutors say, a means for students to “organise themselves intellectually (p9)” or opportunities for practice in analysis, argument formulation and marshalling evidence (p11), whilst students often see them as being about subject knowledge (p9). How did the student use the reading lists? What did the student find difficult about the essay, essay-writing process and why? What is the relationship between tutorial essays and examination essays? Students who see the purpose of the tutorial as coverage of the economics terms search answer, material also see essays as revision material for examinations; tutors tend not to endorse this view (p11). What makes a good Archaeology/History essay?
What does the papers essay, student understand by about the tutor’s comments on the essay? History students interviewed about their educational experience typically said they wanted more feedback. However this was rarely expressed in terms of essay wanting a grade, rather they asked for “more advice on the stranger meursault, style and structure” (Archer, 2006). Does feedback require giving a mark? In the Policy and Guidance on papers essay, Undergraduate Learning and Teaching the meursault essay, University makes it clear tutors should explain their feedback approach explicitly to students, but does not legislate on whether or not marks or grades should be assigned to tutorial work. Paragraph 3.10 states: The scale and papers extent of feedback provided through tutorial teaching is a core element of the 11x17 paper, collegiate University’s learning support for undergraduates. Tutorial teaching provides regular and substantial feedback and essay formative assessment, although it is acknowledged that the precise form will vary from one subject to another, and from tutor to 11x17 copy tutor. For example, tutors take different approaches to the provision of marks. Some prefer written or oral feedback that does not include marks and focuses at least as much on federalist papers, the growth of intellectual understanding as on preparation for future summative assessment. Others see marks as part of a range of appropriate feedback, alongside specific comments and constructive criticism. [. ] What is narrative personal, of most significance is that tutors explain, and students understand, the individual approaches taken (p9).
The Commission of Inquiry’s (COI) report, published in federalist essay 1997, stated that “undergraduates are entitled to effective and helpful written comments on their work” and “marking with grades is not always appropriate” (paragraph 9.37). The question about grades was influenced by the idea of expected standards varying according to the stage reached and grades possibly not being comparable. Other views stress grades as actively unhelpful to students, having a de-motivating and ego-involving potential, whilst effective feedback comments promote task involvement and efforts to improve (Juwah et al, 2004). The Commission’s recommendation that undergraduates be better informed on the grading and analysis 4 of Seven Shaped Testament World for the ) commenting on papers, tutorial work” (COI, 1997, Recommendation 55) suggests tutors should discuss explicitly with students their reasoning and approaches to feedback and marking. The COI Report (1997) responded to terms word search answer Oxford undergraduates’ complaints “that tutors did not provide enough feedback on essays, either by giving an overall grade for an essay or by making specific comments on the content of an essay (paragraph 9.35)” by saying they believed this “represented a misunderstanding of the tutorial process”. The Report declared that “the central part of the federalist papers, business in a tutorial should be active, two-way discussion of the copy paper cheap, student’s work” (paragraph 9.36). Feedback takes place at the point of learning, i.e. in the classroom, the tutorial or the lecture. Essay? Considered in this light, we can interpret the ‘two-way discussion’ recommended by the Commission as the tutor continuing the assessment which began with reading the essay, and supplementing it by questioning the student and papers etf giving oral feedback.
However, tutors must make it explicit to students that this whole process is papers essay, about giving feedback. In addition to weekly tutorials, Collections (college examinations) offer an papers on gold, opportunity for formative assessment and constructive feedback. Students in the OUSU focus groups, though, seem to believe that Collections are “not taken seriously”. They see evidence for this in Collections being returned late and with minimal feedback. Tutors can use Collections to help students monitor their progress and federalist papers feel better prepared for Finals. The University’s Policy and the stranger meursault essay Guidance on Undergraduate Learning and Teaching makes it clear tutors must ensure students both understand the purpose of Collections and receive feedback on these written examinations “within a reasonable timescale”. It seems reasonable to expect that students receive feedback very soon after the examination; this is critical because, other than by federalist papers essay Collections, explicit preparation for writing examination essays is answer key, difficult to provide.
Feedback on taught master’s programmes. Like undergraduates, taught master’s students at Oxford also want more feedback on their work. In OUSU’s 2011 report on students’ responses concerning postgraduate taught courses, a widespread concern about feedback was evident, across all divisions. These graduate students clearly saw feedback on essay, their work as a vital taught course element, without which they could not understand the marking criteria being applied, gauge the standard they had achieved or work out how to improve. Students reported inconsistency in the availability of good, usable feedback. On short, one-year courses, they needed early feedback to determine tutors’ expectations, establish whether they were meeting the requirements and understand how to economics terms word key improve. PGT students would like to essay receive both comments or annotations written on their essays and supplementary oral feedback.
They found it de-motivating to receive inadequate feedback or none. On most courses there was concern over the timing of assignments, both in terms of uneven workloads from term to term, and because it was difficult to 11x17 copy paper cheap use learning gained from essay, feedback on one assignment to understand and meet the requirements on the next one. In particular, it was a problem for some students that feedback was rarely given on assignments being assessed summatively, even if they occurred early in essay the course, because of essay sensitivity over contact between students and examiners. In response to such concerns, the Education Committee has now agreed that all students should receive written feedback on at least one designated piece of formative assessment, e.g. essay or assignment, during the course of the first term, with the purpose of: providing guidance to an essay about computers students for whom extended pieces of writing are unfamiliar forms of assessment; indicating to students their areas of strength and federalist essay weakness in relation to the assessment task; providing course members with an indication of the expectations and standards towards which they are working. In addition the Education Committee has established the principle that limited feedback must be given to students on any elements of summative assessment which are undertaken prior to the final term of the course. It is also Education Committee’s intention that written feedback will be provided for all PGT dissertations or theses of 5,000 words or over, in accordance with an agreed divisional format or template. Feedback to 11x17 copy paper postgraduate research students. Research students also benefit from regular feedback.
The stages of Transfer and Confirmation of Status are important occasions for formal feedback but doctoral students also express the need for regular formative feedback which enables them to papers understand whether they are progressing sufficiently and attaining expected standards in their work. See Giving and receiving feedback (with DPhil students). While students may “accept a teacher’s judgement without demur” (Sadler, 1989, p121) we really want them to develop their own judgement and learn to regulate for themselves the an essay about computers, quality of their work. Papers Essay? The teacher’s role is to provide constructive and timely feedback comments, assisting students to internalise an appropriate concept of good quality in their subject area. Terms Word Puzzle Answer Key? “Students have to be able to judge the quality of what they are producing and be able to regulate what they are doing during the essay, doing of it” (p121). Thus feedback is teaching. A teacher conveys disciplinary standards in several different ways: As a role model , i.e. The Stranger? through demonstrating (modelling) disciplinary practice. Federalist Papers Essay? This might be through lecturing, constructing argument in tutorial discussions or in small group seminars, research papers, etc. A good learning environment requires “a teacher who knows which skills are to be learned, and who can recognize and describe a fine performance, demonstrate a fine performance, and indicate how a poor performance can be improved” (Sadler, 1989, p120).
As a judge , through both written and oral feedback. Good written feedback based on criteria effectively develops student independence by encouraging them to use the personal essays, criteria autonomously for checking their work. Feedback should be sufficiently detailed to enable students to determine how to improve the work, without actually telling them what to do. Remember that oral feedback can sometimes be mistaken by students for general discussion, so this must be made explicit. Essay? As one of the subject experts who set the assessment criteria . If criteria genuinely encapsulate the qualities, skills, knowledge and understanding that characterise graduates in the discipline, at a level which helps students to understand what they are aiming for without prescriptive detail, they help students develop independence as learners with skills to regulate the cheap, standard of their work. Federalist Papers Essay? As a fellow learner . Both tutor and student are engaged in separate and joint endeavours to learn more within the discipline, and on specific topics within the discipline. Be open-minded and prepared to both learn and teach when you interact.
Hounsell et al’s Guidance and Feedback Loop (398kb) diagram highlights challenges facing students at each of the points during the lifecycle of an assignment. Narrative Essays? Difficulties can occur at federalist, each of several steps: Correct conception of task, assignment or goal (e.g. what does ‘critical analysis’ mean?) If a student performs poorly, it may be because they did not understand the task itself. Hadwyn (2006) says, “Academic tasks constitute much more than a list of research etf specific instructions and criteria in a course outline. They are: layered with both explicit and implicit requirements, deeply embedded in discipline specific thinking and presentation genres, and described with discipline specific language”. Further, Lea Street (2000) contend that dealing with these layered issues is not simply a matter of “study skills” or “academic socialisation” but of “academic literacies”, where the student must negotiate conflicting literary practices (p34, Fig 2.1). Devising appropriate strategies for achieving the federalist, goal (e.g. understanding and using a reading list). Completing the task as understood.
Seeking clarification when needed. Interpreting the feedback received: recognising feedback as such, understanding tutor comments, relating feedback received to own assessment of work, recognising implications for action. Oral feedback, especially in an oral performance environment (tutorial discussion, debate, etc.) can be just as important as written feedback. Papers On Gold Etf? One way of encouraging students to make oral feedback ‘usable’ is by suggesting they take notes of discussions about papers, essays (if not during then immediately afterwards), especially when they plan to analysis essay on chapter Shaped the New Testament Carter ) use them for revision purposes. Action in federalist essay response (or “feed-forward”): changing strategies or changing understanding of goals for future assignments or examinations. It is more difficult but important - to apply feedback on narrative, essay 1 to essay 2 (on a different topic). While schedules are very tight, finding a way to allow students to revise and resubmit the same essay can ensure students engage with and respond to essay feedback. Essay cover sheets can be used to direct students’ attention to certain parts of the task, by ensuring they self-assess their work against questions you pose. An essay cover sheet can be structured to hold students accountable for acting on the feedback you’ve already given them by research papers describing how they’ve addressed it in a subsequent essay. This Essay Cover Sheet (12kb) from Law includes some discipline-specific questions. Federalist Papers Essay? To ensure students pay attention to essay on chapter Seven for the analysing an essay or other assignment task before setting about it, what questions or items would best help students in your discipline?
Another idea, perhaps best suited to the ‘problem-set’ assignment style found in Physics or Engineering, is used by Stephen Clark who tells his students “to make a cover sheet for your tutorial work in which you write down unresolved problems or issues you had while tackling any part of the work we have done so far”. This “unstructured” cover sheet approach, i.e. not telling students what to write about, is used to make them examine and isolate what exactly they struggled with. Stephen finds that requiring students to comment on problems they cannot answer often leads them to solving the papers essay, problem (resulting in no cover sheet) or acts as a self-appraisal process which better directs the subsequent tutorial discussions. In Editing as tutor-, self- and peer-assessment (26kb) Liz Baigent describes her approach to fostering a standard of disciplinary writing among groups of visiting students using a model of “professional scholarly life”. Tutors themselves edit parts of students’ first essays, modelling academic writing style and improved communication of ideas. Students receive handbooks and instruction on editing their own work and (optional) peer editing activities are also encouraged. Essays? Try offering the opportunity, perhaps once a term (perhaps over the vacation), for students to revise and resubmit a tutorial essay. Having received feedback comments which suggest improvements, the opportunity of putting tutor recommendations into effect by reworking and resubmitting the essay, will enable students to get to grips more effectively with applying criteria and meeting a required standard. See Gibbs, Student understanding of assessment standards (34kb), which, in the context of comparing Oxford’s approach to assessment with that of other UK universities, also includes an example of an exercise which involved students marking and discussing assignments, as well as comparison of the subsequent end-of-course assessments for federalist papers participant students against those of a control group. See illuminatio 2012 (1,340kb). Clarifying essay marking criteria in history through a student marking workshop . This article by etf Tracey Sowerby begins on page 2 of this issue of Illuminatio.
It discusses using “a pool of papers essay anonymised essays by former students who have given their permission” to economics answer give students experience of applying criteria to marking another person’s work, then applying the same guidelines to federalist essay a critical appraisal of their own work. Understanding Coursework Requirements Assessment Criteria (173kb) gives a number of Oxford examples of suitable activities for narrative helping students to understand requirements and criteria at different stages of papers essay their courses. In 2006, Archer compared assessment practice in his Faculty with Nicol and Macfarlane-Dick’s (2006) Seven Principles - see Feedback principles in action? The Oxford History Faculty (461kb) . You could use the list of principles in Helping students take control of their own learning (234kb) to copy paper reflect on federalist papers essay, your own practice in the same way. Similarly, Gibbs and Simpson’s Conditions under which assessment supports student learning (171kb) could be used to analyse your own practice and the learning and teaching environment you establish for your students. In this Extract from the the stranger meursault essay, Code of Practice on assessment of essay students (104kb) the QAA lists a number of assessment examples intended to help tutors ensure student learning is supported. Insights from research and literature. A number of studies have focused on students’ responses to feedback; whether they understand it (Chanock, 2000) and how they perceive and value it (Weaver, 2006). Chanock (2000) looked at the stranger essay, the problem of students misunderstanding what tutors write on their essays, examining what students and tutors in different Humanities subjects understood by the comment “Too much description; not enough analysis”.
She found terminology was frequently understood differently by federalist essay academics in different disciplines, and students often failed to interpret such comments in the way their tutor intended. Chanock concluded by terms search puzzle recommending: explanation needs to be accompanied by models and papers these are already to hand. When a lecturer explores a question in the classroom; when a tutorial group goes to paper cheap work on essay, a document; when a student reads an article; all of these are models of an essay about analysis in the discipline. What is often lacking is some explicit commentary by the teacher, drawing students’ attention to how exactly this activity or this reading exemplifies the federalist papers essay, process of analysis. Process is as important here as product ; students will not get far simply by imitating an end product without knowing how to narrative personal reach it (Chanock, 2000, p103.
Emphasis added). Walker (2009) set out to discover what makes teacher comments usable by students. Papers Essay? She identified three categories of computers comments: about content; about the essay, student’s development of copy cheap skill (e.g. in analysis, in structuring argument, etc.); or designed to motivate the student. 62% of all feedback comments Walker analysed (n=3095) were either about content or skills development. 14% of these offered an explanation (as opposed to merely indicating a content or skills problem existed or offering a correction for the problem). Walker interviewed students about the federalist, feedback they received and results indicated that, to be usable, feedback comments concerning content or skills development must be fully explained. Overall, her students found skills development comments more usable than those in other categories: respondents said about two-thirds of on chapter Seven Shaped the New Testament Carter ) these comments were “useful/ helpful for future work”. Motivating comments were seen as being useful in the affective domain, and papers students were “pleased/encouraged” by 73% of such comments, although 15% of them led to “lack of understanding of the comment and/or need for more explanation or detail”. “Unqualified praise” expressed alongside “less-than-full marks” led to students being puzzled, and sometimes annoyed, by the conflicting information.
If tutors’ messages to students are inconsistent, students will be dissatisfied. Students questioned about feedback by Ferguson (2011) said what they found most useful were: i) brief written comments throughout the piece of work, and. ii) a written summary or overview. It is interesting (and instructive?) to note that as many as 50% of narrative personal essays Ferguson’s respondents had experience of difficulty reading teachers’ handwriting! . What is federalist papers, needed is an explanation of word search answer key how to improve. . Brief notes linked to the work and explicit. . Essay? Highlight the main issue influencing the grade. . Short, unexplained responses (‘good’, ‘needs more work’, etc.) were of no value at meursault essay, all. . ticks or crosses without further explanation were useless. . Concise remarks must tell you something constructive. (Ferguson, 2011, p56)
Ferguson also found students expressed a strong preference in papers their free text responses for ‘personal’ as opposed to ‘non-personal’ feedback (where ‘non-personal’ focused on comparison with grades or criteria and ‘personal’ focused and commented on specific aspects of the individually presented work). Taras (2006) contended that whilst academics who write scholarly articles for journals receive iterative feedback on their writing, enabling them to improve their work until it is deemed suitable for publication, undergraduates rarely have that opportunity to learn from constructive comments and feedback on assignments. While students get weekly feedback on the same type of assignment, they rarely have the opportunity to revise and resubmit the same piece of work. Doing so could be very valuable and more closely mimics the narrative personal essays, “real-world” of writing, which is a process of iterative drafting. Archer, IW. Two ways in which the workplace has changed in the modern era are that employees are required to work longer hours and there is more pressure on them than in the past. In this essay, I examine how competition is the main reason for federalist essay this and suggest how employers can improve their employees’ working conditions . Competition from the job market is one reason why some employees are under more pressure at work. High levels of unemployment mean that it would often be cheaper for an employer to hire someone else to do the same work. This naturally has a negative psychological effect on employees . It can also result in their staying longer in the office to ensure that they meet their performance targets. Increased competition caused by globalisation is also significant . Many smaller businesses now need to compete either with multinationals or companies from developing countries where labour is cheaper.
The effect of this on employees is that they know they may be made redundant if the business they work for fails. This is not only stressful, but can also lead to their working longer hours to help the on chapter 4 of Seven that the New Testament World ( Warren, business survive. Despite this competition, employers should ensure that their staff have the best possible working conditions . This means that employees should not be required to work overtime unless in an emergency, be given regular breaks and be reassured that their future is safe. If this were to happen, the employees should work more efficiently, something which is in the interest of the papers, employer. My conclusion would be that competition from the job market and globalisation is the on gold etf, principal cause of papers, stress at work and a longer working day . Employers can help address these problems by recognising that reducing stress and regulating working hours will lead to greater efficiency. You will find more exercises on vocab below.
