black rain essay Reflections on Hiroshima and Nuclear War in ap english language essay, Japanese Film. by Robert Feleppa. In the literature on atomic bomb-related themes in Japanese cinema we find a number of trends. Some films—surprisingly few—are intended as open social protests of America’s use of the bombs. There are critics who see the bombings as the key stimulus to engineering entire film genres, including the works of language 2007 Yasujiro Ozu and others, concerned as they were with rapid post-war social transformations and their related spiritual costs. There are others who see the science-fiction genre, especially the Godzilla films, as the main cinematic legacy of the bombings and essay engineering career, identify in this genre—and its natural extension into anime films—deep insights into transformations in Japanese attitudes and social relations. Finally, there are those films which perceive in the experience of Hiroshima and 2007, Nagasaki indications of broader spiritual and social dynamics with very real, apocalyptic potential. It is the films in on the book thief, this latter category that I wish to consider here, since they evoke a cautionary attitude best suited to the spirit of Hiroshima—one I believe is ap english language 2007 essay, especially important to encourage in our students, given America’s growing emphasis on aggressive foreign policy and technological war-making.

1. The lack of protest films in career, the 1950’s and subsequent decades primarily resulted from the suppression of Hiroshima protest films during the occupation, the language reluctance of directors to be associated with the political left, and the policy of Japanese distributors to show protest films infrequently, in remote venues, with little promotion. Also significant, Donald Richie argues, are certain cultural factors: while Western and other non-Japanese critics of the bombings saw them as atrocities, the critical for nurses Japanese saw them as closer in species to earthquakes and other natural disasters. Richie remarks that the basic view of the bomb in early documentaries 2 was. . . Essay. . in effect “This happened; it is all over and finished, but isn’t it too bad? Still, this world is a transient place and this too is engineering, sad; what we feel today we forget tomorrow; this is 2007 essay, not as it perhaps should be, but it is as it is.” This awareness of evanescence and the resulting lamentation has a term in Japanese: mono no aware [translatable as “sympathetic sadness” or “inescapable sadness of living”]. It indicates a feeling for the transience of all earthly things; it involves a near-Buddhistic insistence upon recognition of the eternal flux of life upon this earth. This is the authentic Japanese attitude toward death and disaster (once an interval has passed). (Richie 1996, p. 22) This is certainly one reasonably effective form of reconciliation and integration. However, note that Richie calls this a “near-Buddhistic” attitude, and engaged anthropology, being a man who chooses his words carefully, I think he indicates that there is reason to see this attitude as falling short of a genuinely Buddhist one. To be sure, Buddhism advises against attachment to things in ignorance of life’s transience, and against adding to the sufferings by pointless ego-expressions like resentment. But from a Buddhist—and humanistic—point of 2007 essay view, if, as the Four Noble Truths make plain, the reduction of needless suffering is paramount, then such passive acceptance is not desirable if it perpetuates or threatens to perpetuate suffering.

The films I have chosen to highlight do not rest with mono no aware reconciliation. They force us to feel a deep and unsettling sense of unfinished business, if not outrage. And they beg us to channel these feelings toward the reduction of suffering. In their ways they rebel against the notion that we should get over all this, because, after all, suffering is inevitable. Yet, on business plan company, the other hand, they avoid what I think Shudong Chen was right to ap english characterize in an earlier paper in this conference as a myopic, nationalistic emphasis on victimization. Three major films dealing directly with Hiroshima in the Japanese popular cinema have reached Western audiences: Record of A Living Being and Rhapsody in essay on the book thief, August , by language, Akira Kurosawa; and Black Rain , by Shohei Imamura.

Here I will focus on essay thief, Black Rain and Record of A Living Being , by far the more effective of anti-war statements. I will also say something about Kurosawa’s later Dreams , which picks up on and very effectively expresses many of the themes in these films. Although the direction these later films take may have been molded by occupation and post-occupation censorship of language political criticism, they draw on the immense symbolic power of Hiroshima in useful and important ways. Anthropology Essays. Black Rain (Kuroi Ame) Shohei Imamura’s 1988 film (based on the novel of the same name by Masuji Ibuse) centers on the experiences of a young woman, Yasuko; her aunt, Shigeko; and her uncle, Shigematsu. Ap English Language 2007 Essay. It examines in detail the post-nuclear effects on the life of a woman poisoned by business, the fallout-laden black rain of the ap english 2007 Hiroshima blast and on her family and her village.

As Dorsey and Matsuoka note, despite his intention to depict plainly the direct and indirect consequences of the business plan for clothing company bombing and to essay make a very clear statement about the events surrounding them—as opposed to merely reporting about them—Imamura “said that he chose to work in on the book thief, ‘a quiet voice.’” He thus faced criticism both from commentators “who favor strong political statements and from those who prefer that art have nothing to language essay do with politics.” (1996, p. 204) There is an engineering undeniable tone of mono no aware in ap english language, Black Rain , and essay ethics, a number of critics have noted thematic and 2007, stylistic similarities between this film and the films of plan for clothing company Ozu dealing with the long-term impact of post- war factors on the fabric of ap english Japanese social life. However, the film is pervaded by a sense of urgency and unresolved injustice that takes an important step beyond mono no aware reconciliation. Indeed, in for clothing company, a recent discussion of the ap english essay film Carole Cavanaugh remarks on the significance of its release date, which came at the moment of Japan’s broadest economic expansion up to that point: “When Imamura’s film was released, Japan had become a superpower economically and engineering career, the Japan that can say, ‘No!’ to the United States politically.” (2001, p. 254) The movie opens on the day before the bombing of ap english language 2007 essay Hiroshima—August 5th, 1945. It focuses on scenes of on the thief daily, mundane life, presumably in an effort to emphasize the ap english language 2007 essay bombing’s sudden and staggering disruption of life. There is a powerful account of the detonation itself. The film is shot in black and white in a way that calls to mind a life gone by—reminiscent of the documentaries once common in cinema programs. It also reduces the business potential for gaudy sensationalism that color might introduce, allowing Imamura to keep his audience’s eyes trained steadily on some rather horrific depictions of grossly burned and panicked victims. Here is a clip of the film’s opening sequence: [ Yasuko is participating in a tea ceremony in the countryside several miles from Hiroshima as the bomber flies over. Shigematsu is in a train station in Hiroshima, and is caught in the direct chaos of the explosion.

On seeing the flash, Yasuko runs outside and watches the blooming mushroom cloud. She takes a boat to Hiroshima after the blast to be with her family. She is caught in the black rain. ] The opening sequence—and several subsequent flashbacks to it—suggest that there is something more than a quiet voice at work here. They do more than underscore certain of the film’s characterological aspects, for instance the guilt Yasuko’s uncle feels for essay, having taken his family to his factory in Hiroshima right after the blast. The intent of the opening sequence and its recurrence is not to research dwell on language essay, the horror of the work ethics bomb’s immediate effects, but to impress upon the audience how suddenly life can turn from ordinary routine to nightmarish horror. Ap English 2007 Essay. The film focuses not on the bomb’s immediate impact, but, on the contrary, on essay, its indirect effects. Ironically, of the three central figures, Shigematsu turns out to be one of the few long-term survivors. Much of Black Rain ’s cinematic force resides in its depiction of life five years after the blast (the point at language which Abuse’s novel begins), in Fukuyama city. The family has survived the worst of the war, everything is for clothing company, back to normal, and the family is engaged in the everyday business of finding Yasuko a marriage partner.

Yet there are immediate reminders of the past directly affecting the present: Yasuko visits a clinic to get a certificate of health. Her uncle tries to interest her in a plant whose leaves are supposedly good for fighting off radiation sickness. American planes are flying constantly overhead. Language 2007. There are continuous news reports of the Korean conflict and on social work, of the possible use of atomic weapons in it. Ap English. Imamura’s main concern here is to show how the ‘survivors’ have become victims. Yasuko, who now lives with Shigeko and Shigematsu, has advanced well into her marriageable years, but has received no proposal for marriage because potential suitors have doubts about essay book her health. At the time of the explosion, Yasuko was, as we saw, outside the city, but while traveling to ap english language essay search for her relatives after the blast, she was caught in a shower of radioactive black rain.

She tries to essay on the book thief convince each suitor she is in excellent health and ap english language 2007, produces paperwork to prove it (thus making suitors wonder why the paperwork is essay on social, even necessary, if she is indeed healthy). She finds herself profoundly torn by the conflict between her deep desire to marry, which her family shares, and her inclination to ap english stay home, which would break up what she terms their “community bound by the bomb.” There is thief, no single scene that carries the full meaning of Yasuko and her family’s shared plight; rather, the contours of their suffering are drawn out gradual- point of an American aircraft. This calls to mind not only the typical perspective on 2007, the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki—assumed from a respectful, safe distance—but also the news broadcasts of the Gulf War and the current Iraq invasion. To be sure, “embedded” reporters got viewers a little closer to the action in the second Iraq war; but their coverage provided no palpable sense of the suffering and chaotic confusion experienced by Iraqi victims. Much of this war appears to have been fought from a safe distance—as exemplified in images recently broadcast on CNN of high-tech soldiers in camouflage uniforms controlling ‘smart’ weaponry from behind rows of computers. In summary, the lessons of Black Rain are these: the essay career damage inflicted by nuclear weapons—and other weapons that deeply distort natural processes— goes well beyond their physical effects, hideous though these may be.

They also tear apart the fabric of society—especially in ap english essay, this case, given the strong interdependence and intimacy of business for clothing company personal relationships in ap english 2007, Japanese society. Essay Work. But the lesson of course extends to all of humanity. Record of a Living Being / I Live in Fear (Ikimono no Kiroku) In this 1955 film, Mr. Nakajima (played by an almost unrecognizable Toshiro Mifune), a 60-year old foundry owner, decides he must move his family after a period of brooding over the Second World War’s end and the so-called Bikini incident, in which an unexpectedly large detonation on the Bikini atoll poisoned the crew members of the Japanese vessel Lucky Dragon . He develops a deep fear for language 2007 essay, the future of mankind, and for his family in particular, one that is selected, so compelling that he tries to convince them to move to Brazil to get away from the danger. His motivation is ap english 2007 essay, very close to that of Kurosawa’s own in making the on social film, caught up as he was in the widespread anti-war sentiment spurred in Japan by the Bikini blast. Nakajima’s family worries about his psychological instability—especially insofar as it threatens their financial security—and at the film’s opening we learn that they have convinced his wife to take him to court in an effort to have him declared mentally incompetent. The family wins the essay case, but the father immediately appeals, and engaged anthropology essays, the ensuing legal battle rages in the background throughout the film. In the foreground is a series of ap english 2007 compelling tableaux in which Nakajima appeals to his family members, individually and collectively, to see his way of thinking. Also significant is a dentist who, having served as an advisor to exercises the court, harbors deep reservations about the court’s initial decision. This character continually raises Kurosawa’s central question in Black Rain : who is mad or irrational? Nakajima or the language essay society around him?

I want to look at three scenes in which the essay on social Hiroshima bomb image is especially prevalent. It might be hard to take someone so insane seriously, but we are ultimately won over by Nakajima’s sincerity and compassion. The following scene, in which he argues with his younger son and daughter-in-law, gives some flavor of his character and his madness, while also calling Hiroshima to mind: [ As Nakajima discusses his plans, jet planes are heard passing by low overhead. Suddenly there is a bright flash of light, and he dashes into the next room and crouches over his grandson, gathering him up in his arms. The child begins to cry. There is a clap of thunder followed by rain.

His daughter, with a horrified look on her face, grabs the frightened child away from him. 2007 Essay. ] The bombing figures again in the next scene as the subject of conversation. It also forces a comparison between Nakajima’s ‘mad’ logic and the ‘sane’ logic of essay selected his second son, who sees no reason to worry about the ap english 2007 essay bomb: [ Nakajima is once again at his younger son’s house. Nakajima holds his grandson in his arms. There is a strange and continuous rumbling of thunder. In an career effort to provoke his father, the son remarks that the weather is odd and that newspapers blame it on ap english, atomic testing, and that if there is a war, Japan is a likely place for business for clothing, radioactivity to drift. He remarks on the gruesome effects of ap english 2007 radiation. Parodying mono no aware thinking, he then he tries to convince his father that there is engineering, no point in worrying about what cannot be helped and that he should simply focus, as the son does, on his own life plans and on his own and his family’s happiness. Nakajima grabs a newspaper which has an article about the ap english 2007 atomic threat bearing the headline ‘A Weapon to Massacre Humanity’ and company, a picture of a mushroom cloud. Nakajima shouts “They’ve created a monster” and makes another desperate appeal to his son and daughter-in-law to leave with him. ] Nakajima meets with his entire family to make one more effort to 2007 essay sway them by begging them to join him—thus behaving in a manner most unbecoming of a family patriarch. Selected. The argument ends when he collapses.

Later, upon waking on ap english language, the floor below, he overhears that it is their fear of losing the steady income from engaged, his successful foundry that fuels their opposition to his plan. Thus he decides to burn down the foundry, an action which of course seals the loss of his appeal and ultimately lands him in an asylum. Ap English. In this last scene the research dentist comes to visit him: [ Nakajima is now quite insane. He believes he is 2007, living on another nearby planet. He asks the dentist if many people are left alive. Essay. When he is told they are, he warns that they had better change their ways before it is too late.

Suddenly, he sees the rising sun through his window, and mistakes it for a fiery explosion. He shouts “It’s burning, it’s burning! The earth is at last on 2007 essay, fire!” ] Cavanaugh is essay engineering, critical of the turn in Japanese post-war cinema I Live In Fear represents. Although it sought to be a plain statement of protest about the impact of the ap english language 2007 essay nuclear threat on all humanity, she believes this film solidified Japan’s avoidance of protest against the bombings themselves, and redirected attention to confronting the psychological effects of the business plan company current nuclear threat: “With this film Japan’s most ‘international’ director redirected nuclear cinema along the psychological lines of the American B movie, and it was his apprentice, Honda Ishiro, who would turn that threat into the cartoonish Godzilla . . . . the first in a globally successful series of monster films for export.” (2001, p. 250) Richie speaks in more approving terms of the film’s steadfast rejection of both the political extreme of blaming America for ap english language, the bomb, on the one hand, and the mono no aware theme of sad acceptance and career, moving on, on 2007 essay, the other. It refuses to become reconciled to the dangers. In this it is a valuable riposte to an attitude that accepts but does not change. In the following remark, Richie nicely captures what I consider to essay be the film’s intended significance, and makes plain its connections to Black Rain : This film differs from the usual atom bomb film in many ways.

First, it recognizes that the bomb is out of language essay control, that no one single country owns it, that it is one of the facts of existence in critical thinking exercises, this century. Then, it offers no panacea whatever, no talk of how nice it would be if every one stopped testing it. Too, there is no indication that the director believes Japan alone is ap english language 2007, threatened; rather it is made clear that the film is not so much about a Japanese family in danger as it is about people, about any family, anywhere, in danger. What it offers is an object lesson on for clothing company, what it means to live under this fear, and of how one man and his family are wrecked by the fear alone. There is a further hint that this fear is well founded, that this fear is only the beginning. (1996, p. 32) David Desser notes that although it is the dentist’s job to 2007 essay determine whether the essay selected snobberies father is competent to continue to run his business.

He seriously doubts Nakajima’s sanity, but, Desser continues. . . . the dentist, recognizing that Mifune is paralyzed by fear, also recognizes a core of sanity in his soul. Is it madness to ap english 2007 essay fear destruction by weapons with a proven ability to on the thief destroy on an unprecedented scale or, rather, is it madness to pretend that the world is unchanged, that the nuclear presence in Japan (highlighted throughout the language film by US Air Force supersonic jets) portends nothing of any significance? In other words: Is it madness to pretend that nuclear weapons are merely a fact of life, or is it insane to continue to allow their proliferation? (1995) The film failed financially, and Kurosawa turned at exercises this point to work almost exclusively on historical period pieces. Arguably, his prior work, including his famous Rashomon , are about Hiroshima. For example, Desser argues: Thus even before Record of a Living Being , one could make the case that Kurosawa dealt with the bomb, or at least its legacy, in allegorical form. Consider Rashomon , with its vision of a ruined gate at which sit three perplexed men. What, precisely, has brought Japan, or indeed mankind to its present, perilous state where nothing is certain? Physical ruin and metaphysical doubt, the major pictorial and thematic characteristics of the film, made Rashomon a timely allegory of Japan's ignominious defeat and a universal philosophical examination of the new world order wrought by the bomb. (Desser 1995; cf.

1992, pp. 65f.) As Desser notes, the real question this film puts before us is ‘which is the true madness’—the paranoid fears of the father, or the open possibility of nuclear war. Of course this extends beyond nuclear weapons to ap english 2007 all weapons of mass destruction. What further solidifies the connections to Rashomon are the previous scenes in which Nakajima clutches a child—calling to mind the concluding scene of Rashomon , in which a priest and a woodcutter, both wracked by uncertainties about thinking reality, society, and the worth of humanity, are saved by their compassion for a crying, abandoned child. In the closing scene the priest passes the crying child to the woodcutter (also played by Mifune), an act which immediately pacifies it. These concerns also form a central theme of ap english language essay Dreams (Yume, 1990), along with the costs of humanity’s unbridled effort to dominate nature, to bring it into conformity with scientific, rational will. Book Thief. Kurosawa is 2007 essay, chiefly concerned here with humanity’s determination to use science and critical for nurses exercises, technology to master and ap english, profit from nature—and to subjugate one another. In two of the film’s vignettes, nuclear disaster and a burning earth (Mt. Fuji) represent the direct result of the destabilization of engineering nature resulting from these all-too-human human attempts at subjugation. [Film critic Vincent Canby sees a direct link here to ap english language 2007 essay the final scene of I Live in Fear (1990).] As such, they take up and expand upon the notion of nuclear irrationality, and familial greed and self-interest, that run through I Live in Fear . Dorsey and Matsuoka note: “. . . the subject of Hiroshima embraces not only the destruction of that city at that time, and incidentally that of the ‘forgotten’ bombed city Nagasaki, but it also embraces the future of mankind in the nuclear age.” Insofar as we are all threatened by nuclear war, “the theme of Hiroshima is not parochial, and it is not merely an event in on social ethics, world history, it is directly related to the ‘fate of the essay earth’. . .” 3. Certainly one question that Kurosawa raises is whether scientific rationality aimed at company the heedless domination of nature and each other does not contain some deeply embedded self-destructive dynamics. This calls to mind Dr.

Fukui’s historical survey, on the first day of the conference, of our passionate and deliberate development of weaponry. 4 Weapons of mass destruction are the culmination of a long process driven by competition, greed, and essay, myopic nationalism, among other things. They have now come to the point where they can destroy us. Perhaps now that the US has dominance in nuclear weapons, nuclear destruction is no longer the most likely path to anthropology Armageddon. However, biological and chemical weapons can certainly achieve this. Consider also how deeply embedded images of the apocalypse are in various cultures—the Shapiro (2000) article in my bibliography contains some very interesting commentary on this score. So generalizing on the meaning of Hiroshima and language 2007 essay, Nagasaki, as the films I’ve considered suggest, might be seen as a way of absolving America of responsibility for these attacks. We deflect attention away to the commonly shared threat.

Moreover, we might argue, this was all inevitable: these weapons would have been developed by the Germans or someone else if not by us. However, the argument “someone would have killed X if I hadn’t” wouldn’t hold up well in court and shouldn’t here. The US developed and used these weapons. The question then is, what responsibility falls on book thief, our shoulders as a result? I think it is our special responsibility to adopt the most effective means to reduce the threats of weapons of mass destruction. However, to speak this way seems to lead right into the ideology behind our current Iraq policy—that is, we must reflect seriously on the role of essay myopic nationalism in the escalation of armament technology and conflict through history. These films encourage students to ask a very important question, especially in light of their constant exposure to an American news media establishment that appears to encourage trust in the prospects for high-tech war: Do we correctly address the threat of weapons of mass destruction by emphasizing our capacity to overwhelm any enemy through our monopoly on technologically superior—and infinitely more precise—military technology, along with our dominance in information and surveillance capacities? Or are we perpetuating the elements that seem to turn motives for self-protection toward the ends of self-destruction? The tradition of Frankenstein to Godzilla to Dreams contains constant reminders of snobberies what unbridled human passion coupled with ambitious scientific innovation can produce.

As many critics of US policy have noted, the attempt to use our weapons advantage to 2007 essay crush any opposition—in ignorance of the essay snobberies motivations behind the actions of our enemies, and in disregard of the plight of the societies from which they come—only perpetuates a reliance upon such weapons. The US’s responsibility, which would result from its current state of dominance alone, even if it were not guilty of various atrocities and in a position to ap english language 2007 commit more, is to move away from the Cold War mentality in which it still operates. In his 1993 inaugural speech President Clinton remarked that “Today, a generation raised in the shadows of the Cold War assumes new responsibilities in a world warmed by the sunshine of freedom but threatened still by essay snobberies, ancient hatreds and new plagues.” He went on to wonder whether American foreign policy could shake itself free of these influences. I think we have an obligation to encourage our students to consider these same concerns. Thematic clusters for classroom use. Yasujiro Ozu’s films, especially Late Autumn and Tokyo Story , highlight the ap english language 2007 theme of postwar impact on Japanese social structure. Plan Company. It might be productive to consider some of the sharp contrasts in the anime tradition—like Akira—which signal complete liberation from traditional social values in a post apocalyptic world. Also, the film is ripe for development of ap english feminist themes—see especially Todeschini’s “Death and career, the Maiden” (1996). A potentially useful film on this score is the 1983 made for TV film Testament (directed by Lynne Littman and language 2007 essay, starring Jane Alexander) about an American community indirectly poisoned by fallout from engaged anthropology research, a nuclear war. Also, Stanley Kramer’s 1959 On the Beach fits well. (Alain Resnais’s Hiroshima, Mon Amour plays up interesting themes concerning the subtle transformations that Hiroshima makes to our memories, but it is ap english, complex and may not be especially accessible to students. Also, it can appear to use the Hiroshima symbol to make more of a point about the complexities of human relationships.) The impact on social relations is also a central theme in the third film I mentioned at the outset, Kurosawa’s 1992 Rhapsody in August . An elderly woman who lost close family members in the Nagasaki attack is contacted by an estranged brother, who many years earlier emigrated to Hawaii and married an American.

A reunion results in which an American cousin, played by Richard Gere, deals with the resentment of the woman’s grandchildren. Although generally regarded as weak and engineering, pedantic by critics (Kurosawa intended the film to 2007 essay educate younger Japanese who had dwindling knowledge of engaged essays Hiroshima and Nagasaki), the film boasts one fairly effective scene in which Gere apologizes to his great aunt for the attacks, and it might be worth showing this scene, if not the whole film. Let me first sound a note of warning: the language early scenes of the selected snobberies film have an undeniably B-movie feel about them, and this might undermine its effectiveness for students. I found the language film grew on me, largely due to work Mifune’s compelling portrayal. Its air of camp is linked to the absurdity of his character’s dream and the oddness of his behavior; but his dead seriousness and profound fear for language essay, humanity become progressively clearer. But the film may not have the same effect on students, and it might be useful to consider showing only the more effective and significant segments. The film’s concerns are elaborated, as I indicated, in work, Kurosawa’s Dreams , which also develops some of the themes of Black Rain . Also, critics note strong connections between this film and Rashomon and language, also Throne of Blood . The irrationality-rationality theme is the centerpiece of Kubrick’s masterpiece black comedy Dr. Work Ethics. Strangelove . This latter film also is good at demonstrating the interconnections between nuclear irrationality and certain mainstream American values.

Also, it might help students to reflect on the connections between scientific development and commercial and military interests. In this respect, you might find useful James Burke’s Connections series, which aired on PBS in the early 1990's. It is still, I believe, available on videotape. 1. Ap English Language 2007 Essay. Worth some mention in passing are the atomic themes many critics see in the sci-fi genre. Essay Work. I will mention, but not discuss, the atomic trends many critics see in ap english, the sci-fi genre of Godzilla , Mothra , and related films about nuclear radiation-induced monsters—as well as in the anime genre. An interesting article in my bibliography is Noriega’s effort to explain the on social work ethics psychological dynamics of repression he sees reflected in sci-fi.

Also intriguing is Freiberg’s piece on Akira and other recent anime films, which she reads in postmodern terms as expressing a vision of a post-nuclear holocaust world which empowers Japanese youth by freeing them from the traditions of ap english 2007 their past. 2. For example, Nagasaki After the Bomb (1952), Pictures of the Atom Bomb (1952), The Bell of Nagasaki. (1950), I'll Not Forget the Song of Nagasaki (1952), and Children of Hiroshima (1952). 3. My first tip of ap english advice before you even start is to not get lost in the resume, but remember what you’re trying to accomplish.

Not only does your resume reflect you, but it also attracts or repels certain kinds of employers. Obviously you want the good ones, and your resume can be that filter. That said, however, you always need to stand behind what is on your resume because ultimately you are what makes the difference in the interview and job. Lastly, you might be thinking “Writing a resume has nothing to engaged anthropology do with technology.” Au contraire. It has everything to do with technology unless you write yours with a feather pen on animal hide. The Most Important Part Of The Resume. What would you consider the ap english essay, most important part of a resume? Your education?

Skillset? Experience? Vast knowledge in essay on social ethics a specific area? In my opinion, all of those are great, but none of essay them are the most important aspect of your resume. The most important part of business for clothing your resume is your contact information. Think about it. If you were an employer looking through vast amounts, or even just a few resumes and language 2007 essay, you stumbled upon one that “wowed” you, but included no contact information, what would you think? What would you do? First off, a thought might occur that they aren’t attentive to details enough to even remember to include it. Anthropology Essays? Second, you might not have the ap english language 2007 essay, time or even care to try to find their contact information. Perhaps it was even in essay selected an email signature or something and you have it somewhere, but you are likely to not put much effort if they can’t even do that much.

Next, it’s important where it goes. As tempting as it may be, don’t place your contact information (or anything really) in ap english 2007 the header or footer. The primary reason being that if you submit your resume online to a transposing database, the header and footer are likely to be missed in the scanning for on social, key words and phases. This is because most just scan through the ap english language 2007, body of the resume. There is a common thought out there that your resume shouldn’t extend one page, unless you are something special. Selected Snobberies? And sadly, students in high school and ap english 2007, universities are learning this still. I cannot count the essay career, times I was told this in ap english essay school, even college. In fact, my last semester before I graduated I was applying for a job and asked an instructor for her input on for clothing company, my already stellar resume (I thought so, anyways).

This was one of the things she told me to do only make it one page. But when looking at my resume, that was clearly unrealistic. I had far too many valuable experiences to just cut them out, even if they all weren’t completely “relevant” to the job I was applying for ap english, which I’ll cover later. The answer to your question is “No. You don’t have to make it one page.” However, there are some guidelines to follow here: Don’t add filler information, larger font or extra spaces just to make it two pages. Don’t make the font too small and hard to read to make it fit to one or two pages.

It should be equal. If it’s two pages, make it a full two pages. If it spills just over one page, tweak your resume until it fits. Focus on content, not length. Once you have quality content, then make the size adjustments. As you might see, they somewhat contradict each other in a way, but I think you should understand it. These are the essay on social work, tips that helped me. I can’t remember how or when I learned them. It was likely a combination or the Internet, school (very minimal) and personal experience through self-teaching.

Create A Clean, Easy-To-Follow Layout. In some ways, this goes right along with how many pages you have. You definitely want to ap english language essay customize the layout to the number of pages that you have. There are a couple aspects in having an selected snobberies easy-to-follow resume. First, you must have a nice template. You don’t want something busy or obnoxious. Something that makes it easy to essay find the information the interviewer is ethics looking for. Another side, however, is less about the actual template and more about how you position your content. Be consistent.

I can’t emphasize this enough. If you do something one way in an area of 2007 your resume, do it that same way throughout the rest of it. Critical Thinking For Nurses Exercises? If you change how something is positioned. If necessary, make that same change in all other areas of your resume. You want your resume to flow , not have your interviewer feel like they’re in ap english language essay a chaotic abyss of words when reading your resume. As far as choosing a template goes, there are tons of them. Thinking For Nurses Exercises? If you’re using Word, Microsoft has several. The internet is full of ideas Top 3 Websites To Build A Free Resume Online Top 3 Websites To Build A Free Resume Online Read More and ap english language 2007, there are even ways to essay use LinkedIn to create your resume 2 Tools To Turn Your LinkedIn Profile Into A Neat-Looking Resume 2 Tools To Turn Your LinkedIn Profile Into A Neat-Looking Resume LinkedIn isn't only good for networking.

Although, I wouldn’t necessarily condone only using that as your main resume, but it’s a nice option. What I did was get an idea from a resume I saw and created one for myself, making custom tweaks here and there to ap english 2007 essay my liking, while keeping the basic layout the career, same. It doesn’t matter what template you choose, as long as it meets the requirements of being easily read. There are also a lot of ap english 2007 essay ways to make your resume. Career? From infographics Two Easy Ways To Create Visual Infographics Of Your Résumé Two Easy Ways To Create Visual Infographics Of Your Résumé Creative jobseekers are always searching for ap english 2007 essay, new ways to career distinguish themselves to potential employers. One of the ap english language, quickest ways to do this is to make your résumé stand out from the business plan for clothing, crowd. Once you've got. Read More to clever designs to videos.

However, though these are very cool, I don’t personally feel they’re very practical especially not for all careers across the board. Some careers strive for creative individuals that stand out from the rest these are the ap english language 2007 essay, kind of resumes that fit. All other careers simply should have pretty basic resumes. That doesn’t mean it has to be boring to read. Just like a story, you want the business plan company, interview to feel engaged when reading it, to be impressed when they set it down or better yet, not be able to ap english essay set it down, but to continue to look through it. Content plays a huge role in whether your layout looks lean or not.

You can have a great looking template, but not an easy to read resume. This is likely due to your content not being as clear and concise as it should be. Keeping things as short as possible is important. Let me put an asterisk by essay that though. You don’t want a vague resume. Meaning, you want to be thorough and avoid short, one to two word lines. It’s ok to have sentences and explain yourself in language your resume. This was something I learned by myself as well. In high school, I felt as if they pushed your resume to summarize your professional life. Essay On Social Ethics? And to an extent you want it to, but not too much to the point that you have dwindled down every skill and experience. Ap English Language 2007? In fact, many of the cliched phrases and essay selected, sayings for resumes are derived from this very principle of “minimalism.” Again, you want to be concise, and certainly not redundant, but you need to make sure that you are also explaining who you are, what you’ve done, and maybe even why you have done it.

Obviously you want your resume to stand out from the rest. You’ve gone to great measures choosing a killer template, creating excellent content oh, content. About that. 2007? Reread everything you’ve got on for nurses exercises, your resume. How much of that have you literally accomplished ? Have you specified your extent of knowledge in that skill or experience? Let’s say you have “Managed a team to create blah blah blah.” Did you really manage the team?

Or did you just observe them? Perhaps you did help manage the team, but in that phrase, it sounds like you were the sole manager. Were there others of equal stature whom you worked with to manage the team? These are important things to include. I have found myself being a little overzealous when writing/editing my resume and often need to step back and look at things a little bit more realistically. In the image blow you can see I chose the word “assisted.” There are a lot more powerful words that sound better, but essentially that is all I did and it wouldn’t be right to set a bar higher than what my skill level depicts. Also, the majority of the time, being honest will impress. Ok, so don’t literally forget them. But don’t add them, not mention anything referring to them on your resume. For a long time I added “references available” in the footer. Then I read how that is not really necessary since employers assume that you will have references, especially if you’re “sharp” which your resume will often indicate.

Employers typically will ask for ap english 2007 essay, references later. However, depending on the situation, they do sometimes ask for references at the same time of the resume (or sometimes, you just know they’re going to want them right away). In these situations, I do include three references which are the most relevant to the job I’m applying for. I have a separate resume created with my references already in it so all I need to essay engineering do is swap out any references, if I so desire, change their contact information and language essay, send it away. That is an exception though. For the essay selected, general resume that you might hand out and certainly for any public resume of yours which you post to the internet, leave out the references. Ap English 2007 Essay? If the employers like what they see, they’ll contact you for business, more. It also gives them a reason to contact you for more, and indirectly tells you they’re interested. The more contact you have with them the 2007 essay, better so you don’t want to give them everything they want right away, unless of essay on the thief course they directly ask for it.

Grammar. I can’t emphasize it enough. I’ve said it four times and I still don’t feel that you quite understand what I’m getting at. Alright, so I’ll assume that you do. Honestly though, this is language 2007 one of the most important aspects of your resume. Essay Selected Snobberies? I’d almost say it’s right below remembering to ap english language 2007 add and having proper placement of critical thinking for nurses exercises contact information. It doesn’t just show that you know how to make a resume, but that you pay attention to ap english essay detail.

Detail that also will be expected on the job, no matter what you do. If you have trouble with this, don’t just do it on your resume, practice it in critical every day life so that when you do get a job, you don’t disappoint. As you can see, even I mess up grammar occasionally. Although it doesn’t happen often. I’ve already mentioned this briefly when referring to having multiple resumes, one with and one without references.

However, it doesn’t stop there. I highly recommend you tweak your resume per job. Essay? Slightly adjust your objective to match what you are expecting from that job and what they are looking for. Add any skills that you have that may be more relevant to the job. Just adjust the essay career, overall focus of language 2007 your resume to that company. It should also relate to the cover letter you write to business for clothing them and include many of the same things. Since graduating, I’ve applied at several places which are very different. Not all of the places were paying, some volunteer, like zoos, but many still requested a resume. Ap English Essay? From an avian sanctuary to two zoos to several vet clinics, my resume had a lot of essay tweaks. Had I not created multiple versions, I would have been in a mess and would have been constantly changing and editing what I wanted that particular organization to see. Instead of having to make the whole thing again, I recommend saving it as another version, opening that version and making the changes, then saving it again.

That way you don’t overwrite your other versions of resumes. I also recommend having PDF and DOC versions of your resume. Personally, I prefer sending a PDF version versus a DOC version. Ap English? Most of the time that is what employers want anyways. After creating resume after resume, you will soon realize that they need to critical for nurses be managed some how. Read More about that. In that article I talk about naming your files according to what is included in 2007 essay them and also dating them. This is especially important with resumes. The SAT essay prompts have several important things in ap english language common: They’re all passages that try to convince the reader of the veracity of the author’s claim They’re all around the same length (650-750 words) They’re all meant to be analyzed and written about in a relatively short period of time (50 minutes) This means that you can have a pretty good idea ahead of anthropology essays time of what types of argument-building techniques you might see when you open the booklet on test day. The main techniques the author uses aren't going to ap english 2007, be overly complex (like the first letter of every word spelling out a secret code), because you just don’t have the essay book, time to language 2007 essay, analyze and write about complex techniques. And because of that, you can prepare yourself with SAT essay examples that’ll be likely to research essays, found across persuasive passages about ap english language essay many different issues —we've provided some ideas below.

We've chosen two examples of evidence, two examples of reasoning, and business company, two examples of stylistic/persuasive elements you can use as stellar evidence to support your thesis . Play to the features of the passage – if there are a lot of facts/statistics, make sure to discuss that; if it dwells more on 2007 personal anecdotes/appeals to emotion, discuss those. For each example below, we also show you how you can use the type of evidence to support your thesis across a range of on social prompts. This should prove to you how effective pre-planned examples are. So, without further ado, onto language 2007 essay our list of multipurpose support for critical thinking, any SAT Essay prompt. The most basic way author builds an argument is by supporting claims with evidence . There are many different kinds of evidence author might use to support her/his point, but I'm just going to discuss the two big ones I've seen in language essay the various official SAT Essay prompts that have been released. These two types of critical thinking evidence are Facts and Statistics and ap english language 2007, Anecdotes . Example Type #1: Facts and Statistics. Employing statistics and essay ethics, facts to bolster one's argument is ap english language, one of the most unassailable methods authors can use to build an argument. This argument-building technique is particularly common in essays written about scientific or social studies-related topics, where specific data and facts are readily available. Statistics usually show up in the form of essay on social work specific numbers related to the topic at hand - maybe as percents, or maybe as a way to communicate other data.

Here're a couple of examples of statistics from an ap english language 2007 official SAT essay prompt, Let There Be Dark by selected snobberies Paul Bogard: Example : 8 of 10 children born in the United States will never know a sky dark enough for the Milky Way. Example : In the United States and Western Europe, the amount of light in the sky increases an average of about 6% every year. Factual evidence can also be in the form of non-numerical information. Often, you'll see facts presented with references to language 2007 essay, the research study, survey, expert, or other source from which they're drawn. Here's another example from Let There Be Dark: Example : Already the World Health Organization classifies working the night shift as a probable human carcinogen. Another form of evidence that is often used as an alternative to actual facts or statistics is the anecdote. This type of essay on social work evidence is most often found in ap english language 2007 speeches or other sorts of essay prompts that are written as a personal address to the reader. An anecdote is a short story about a real person or event . When an author discusses own personal experience or personal experience of someone they know or have heard of, that's anecdotal evidence. Here's an snobberies example of (part of) an anecdote from an official SAT essay prompt that was adapted from a foreword by language 2007 former U.S.

President Jimmy Carter: One of the most unforgettable and humbling experiences of our lives occurred on essay the coastal plain. We had hoped to see caribou during our trip, but to our amazement, we witnessed the migration of tens of thousands of caribou with their newborn calves. In a matter of a few minutes, the sweep of tundra before us became flooded with life, with the sounds of grunting animals and clicking hooves filling the air. The dramatic procession of the language, Porcupine caribou herd was a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife spectacle. We understand firsthand why some have described this special birthplace as “America’s Serengeti.” Even though anecdotes aren't statistics or facts, they can be powerful because it’s more relatable/interesting to the reader to read an anecdote than to engineering career, be presented with dry, boring facts.

People tend to 2007, put more faith in experiences if they can personally connect with the essay engineering career, experiences (even though that doesn't actually affect how likely or not a statement is to be true). In the ap english, example above, rather than discussing the statistics that support the creation of wildlife refuges, Jimmy Carter instead uses an anecdote about experiencing the exercises, wonder of nature to ap english, illustrate the plan for clothing, same point - probably more effectively. By inviting the reader to experience vicariously the majesty of witnessing the migration of the Porcupine caribou, Carter activates the reader's empathy towards wildlife preservation and so makes it more likely that the reader will agree with him that wildlife refuges are important. All authors use reasoning to some extent, but it’s not always a major part of how the language 2007, author builds her/his argument. It's not always enough just to for clothing company, throw out support for ap english language 2007 essay, a claim – an author may choose to use reasoning to explain how the evidence presented actually builds the argument. Example Type #3: Counterarguments and Counterclaims. One way in which an author might use reasoning to persuade the reader to accept the engaged anthropology research essays, claim being put forward is to discuss a counterargument, or counterclaim, to the author's main point. The discussion (and subsequent neutralization) of counterarguments is found in prompts across all subject areas. A counterargument or counterclaim is essay, simply another point of view that contradicts (either fully or partially) the author's own argument. When some might claim, however, or other contrast words and phrases show up in an essay prompt, the author is likely presenting a counterclaim. Here's an example of an effective presentation (and negation) of a counter claim from an official SAT essay prompt, The Digital Parent Trap by Eliana Dockterman: “You could say some computer games develop creativity,” says Lucy Wurtz, an administrator at the Waldorf School in Los Altos, Calif., minutes from Silicon Valley. “But I don’t see any benefit.

Waldorf kids knit and build things and paint—a lot of really practical and creative endeavors.” But it’s not that simple. While there are dangers inherent in access to Facebook, new research suggests that social-networking sites also offer unprecedented learning opportunities. So how does bringing up an opposing point of view help an author build her argument? It may seem counterintuitive that discussing a counterargument actually strengthens the main argument. However, as you can see in the brief example above, giving some space to another point of view serves to make it seem as if the discussion’s going to be more “fair.” This is still true whether the essay, author delves into language 2007 essay the counterargument or if the author only briefly mentions an opposing point of selected view before moving on. But a true discussion of the counterargument , as is present in Dockterman's article, also shows a deeper understanding of the topic than if the article only presented a one-sided argument . And because it demonstrates that the author knows the topic well enough to be able to see the ap english language essay, issue from multiple sides, it means that the engaged, reader is more likely to trust that the author's claims are well-thought out and ap english language 2007, worth believing. In the case of the Dockterman article, the author not only mentions the opposite point of view but also takes the time to get a quote from someone who supports the opposing viewpoint. This even-handedness makes her following claim that it's not that simple more believable, since she doesn't appear to be presenting a one-sided argument.

Example Type #4: Explanation of Evidence. In some cases, the clarity with which the author links her evidence and her claims is integral to the author's argument. As the College Board Official SAT Study Guide says, Reasoning is the connective tissue that holds an critical for nurses argument together. It’s the “thinking” — the logic, the analysis — that develops the argument and ties the claim and evidence together. This is one of the trickier argument-building techniques to ap english, discuss (at least in my opinion), because while it is present in many essay prompts, it isn't always a major persuasive feature.

You can pretty easily identify an author's explanation of evidence if the thinking, author connects claims to support and explains it , rather than just throwing out language 2007 essay evidence without much ceremony or linking to the claim; however, whether or not the explanation of the evidence is a major contributing factor to the author's argument is somewhat subjective. Here's a pretty clear instance of a case where an author uses explanations of each piece of evidence she discusses to logically advance her argument (again from the Dockterman passage): And at on social MIT’s Education Arcade, playing the empire-building game Civilization piqued students’ interest in history and was directly linked to an improvement in the quality of their history-class reports. Unfortunately, the explanation the Official SAT Study Guide gives for how to discuss an author's reasoning is ap english language 2007, a little vague: You may decide to discuss how the author uses (or fails to use) clear, logical reasoning to draw a connection between a claim and the evidence supporting that claim. But how exactly you should go about doing this? And wh y is it persuasive to clearly explain the link between evidence and claim? In general, when an author explains the logic behind her argument or point, the reader can follow along and on the book thief, understand the ap english language 2007 essay, author’s argument better (which in essay selected snobberies some cases makes it more likely the reader will agree with the author).

In the Dockterman example above, the author clearly lays out data ( Civilization leads to improvements in history class), a claim (this is because of engagement with the game and thus the subject material), provides data that back up that claim (retention rate skyrockets when students do things for themselves), and links that smaller claim to a larger concept (actively browsing pages on a computer or tablet is way more brain-stimulating than vegging out in language 2007 front of the TV). This clear pattern of business for clothing data-explanation-more data-more explanation enables the reader to follow along with Dockterman's points. Ap English Language 2007 Essay! It's more persuasive because, rather than just being told Civilization leads to improvements in history and having to career, take it on faith, the reader is forced to reenact the thinking processes that led to the argument, engaging with the topic on a deeper level. Examples of language Stylistic/Persuasive Elements. This final category of examples is the essay selected snobberies, top layer of argument building. The foundation of a good argument is evidence, which is often explained and elucidated by reasoning, but it is often the addition of stylistic or persuasive elements like an ironic tone or a rhetorical flourish that seals the deal. Vivid language is truly the icing on the persuasive cake. As with explanations of evidence, vivid language can be found across all topics of essay prompts (although they usually play a larger role when the passage is light on facts or logic). Vivid language is pretty easy to spot - it shows itself in similes, metaphors, adjectives, or any words that jump out at ap english language 2007 essay you that don’t seem to work ethics, have purely functional purposes . Ap English Language! Here are a couple of examples - the first is Paul Bogard again: …show that what was a very dark country as recently as the thinking, 1950s is 2007 essay, now nearly covered with a blanket of light.

This example is relatively restrained, using the metaphor of a blanket of light to add emphasis to Bogard's discussion of light pollution. A more striking example can be found in another official SAT essay prompt, adapted from Martin Luther King, Jr.'s speech Beyond Vietnam - A Time To Break Silence: Vietnam continued to draw men and skills and money like some demonic destructive suction tube. Vivid language is an essay selected effective argument building device because it puts the reader in the author’s shoes and draws them into the passage . If used in moderation, vivid language will also make the topic more interesting for language 2007 essay, the reader to read, thus engaging them further. Plan Company! In the excerpt taken from Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech above, the phrase demonic destructive suction tube is startling and essay, provocative, meant to rouse the audience's indignation at the injustice and waste of the Vietnam war. If King had left out the business plan, second part of the sentence and only said, Vietnam continued to draw men and skills and money, his point would not have had as big of an impact. Example Type #6: Direct Addresses and Appeals to language 2007 essay, the Reader. The last category I'll be discussing in this article are direct addresses and appeals to for clothing, the reader. These stylistic elements are found across all sorts of different passage topics, although as with the previous category, these elements usually play a larger role when the passage is light on facts or logic.

Direct addresses and appeals to the reader are wordings or other stylistic devices specifically designed to provoke a response (often emotional) in the reader . This category covers many different elements, from appeals to emotion to rhetorical questions. Here's an language 2007 example of an appeal to emotion, taken again from Martin Luther King, Jr.'s speech: Perhaps a more tragic recognition of reality took place when it became clear to me that the war was doing far more than devastating the hopes of the engaged anthropology essays, poor at home. It was sending their sons and their brothers and their husbands to fight and to die in extraordinarily high proportions relative to the rest of the population. And here's an example of a rhetorical question (from the ap english 2007, Paul Bogard article): Who knows what this vision of the essay engineering, night sky might inspire in each of us, in our children or grandchildren? Appealing to language 2007, the emotions , as Martin Luther King, Jr. does in his speech, is an alternate route to persuasion, as it causes readers to emotionally (rather than logically) agree with the author . By describing how the war was causing their sons and their brothers and their husbands to fight and die, King reminds the reader of the terrible costs of war, playing upon business company their emotions to get them to agree that the Vietnam War is a mistake, particularly for the poor. Rhetorical questions , on the other hand, get the readers to ap english language 2007 essay, step into the author's world. By reading and thinking about the author's question, the reader engages with the topic on a deeper level than if the reader were just given a statement of business plan company what the author thinks . In the case of the ap english language 2007, Bogard example above, the rhetorical question draws the reader into thinking about his/her descendants, a group of business plan for clothing company people for whom the reader (presumably) only wishes the best, which then puts the reader into a positive mood (assuming the reader likes his/her descendants). As you can see, these examples of language 2007 different argumentative techniques can be extracted from a lot of different article types for a wide range of essay topics . This is because the examples themselves are so meaningful and language 2007 essay, complex that they can be used to discuss a lot of issues.

The main point is, you don't have to wait until you see the prompt to develop an arsenal of types of argument-building techniques you can use to support your points.
